Six weeks ago, he walked away with the $266,000 first prize on the Asian Pacific Tour and now Vladaimir ‘Benye’ Geshkenbein has taken down the Heads Up Grand Slam in London and walked away with the $120,000 winners cheque.
Having taken out PKR Pro James Sudworth in a classic semi-final, the Swiss player went on to book his place in the final where he played Juha Helppi from Finland. Having claimed that “I don’t know how you [Helppi] play, but it won’t be a problem for me”, Benye then went on to play with continual aggression that was hard to match.
Once he had built a 2-1 chip lead, the final result was never in doubt. After 2 hours Helpi found himself looking at an A-6 and called Benye’s All-In raise preflop.
The Swiss player turned over a Q-10 meaning that he would need some help from the flop … and help he got after he flopped a gut-shot straight and then hitting a flush draw on the turn. The river gave him the flush that he needed to raise his hands in the air in triumph.
And so the first Heads Up Grand Slam came to an end. Having been an unparalleled success, it can only be a matter of time before the second Heads Up tournament begins to be planned.
Footage of the action is currently being compiled and will shortly be broadcast on both sides of the Atlantic on PKR TV.
